PHOENIX — A security review website has again ranked a Phoenix suburb as one of the nation’s safest cities to raise a child.
Safewise ranked Gilbert 12th in its 2019 list of the 50 safest cities, noting that “even as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the country, Gilbert still has time to put families first.”
Cities were judged on four categories — violent crime, property crime, sex offenders per capita and high school graduation rates — to compute an overall safety score.
Gilbert fell below the average of the 50 included cities in violent crime rate per 1,000 people (0.86) and property crime rate per 1,000 people (13.86).
Last year, Gilbert was ranked as the nation’s No. 16 safest city to raise a child.
Other Arizona cities that made the 2019 list were Surprise (No. 35) and Scottsdale (No. 42).
Safewise limited the rankings to cities with at least 75,000 residents that had submitted complete crime reports to the FBI.
Carmel, Indiana, was the ranking’s safest city to raise a child.
