Scottsdale audit finds 3 bridges ‘structurally deficient’

SCOTTSDALE — A Valley city did some soul searching, and learned it’s not keeping up on bridge maintenance.

Scottsdale’s internal audit found not all bridges made it onto the inspection list.

“And we’re going through and ensuring that they’re properly added,” said Public Works Director Dan Worth. “One in particular is the one we just replaced: 68th Street over the Arizona Canal.”

Worth also pledges to follow up on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s recommendations for repairs, including three bridges since 2014 deemed “structurally deficient.”

“I was somewhat surprised by a couple of the findings,” Worth said. “I’m not saying I disagree with them.”

Worth insists all Scottsdale bridges are safe and repaired as necessary.

But he admits the city’s record-keeping fell behind.

“We’ve got the process in place for the inspections on the bridges,” Worth said. “We just have to verify that we’re properly adding new ones into the inventory, so that they’re getting addressed.”
