PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation is 4 miles closer to its goal of fully expanding Interstate 10 to six lanes between Phoenix and Tucson.

Three lanes are now open in each direction between Earley Road and I-8 in Casa Grande, ADOT announced Thursday.

The section was part of a $43 million project that also includes replacing the I-10 bridges over Jimmie Kerr Boulevard.

Further south, a similar $72 million project between Eloy and Picacho is almost finished, with I-10 getting realigned and widened to six lanes between Sunshine Boulevard and milepost 213 just south of Picacho Highway.

That project also includes a new I-10/State Route 87 interchange and the installation of a first-of-its-kind dust detection and warning system over a 10-mile stretch between Sunshine Boulevard and Picacho Peak Road.

Work on both projects is scheduled to wrap up later this year.

That will leave the 23 miles between SR 387 near Casa Grande and Queen Creek Road near Chandler as the only part of I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson with just two lanes each way.

ADOT said it was working with Maricopa Association of Governments and the Gila River Indian Community on a design report for that portion, but work there is still a few years away and a timeline has yet to be established.

We want to hear from you.
