PHOENIX – A fire at a construction site just north of Tempe Town Lake near Scottsdale Road created plumes of dark smoke visible for miles Wednesday afternoon.
Andrea Glass, a spokeswoman for the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, said a foam roof ignited when welding work was being done, and the flames spread to other materials.
Firefighters contained the fire to the roof next a parking garage, and nobody was injured, she said.
Most of the damage was to construction materials on the roof.
You can see the smoke still coming off that fire and beginning to "shade" Tempe Town Lake and the L-202. Reminder – the EB Scottsdale off-ramp is closed and traffic on the WB off-ramp can only go northbound. #phxtraffic pic.twitter.com/sNp8TvLhKg

To keep the area clear while firefighters worked to control the flames, the Scottsdale Road off-ramp from the eastbound Loop 202 was closed and traffic on the westbound off-ramp was only permitted to turn north, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Eastbound Loop 202 traffic was backed up for miles while smoke filled the skies.
The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m.
