PHOENIX – A suspect who allegedly threatened a friend with a gun was found dead inside a Phoenix home Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Police tried to contact the man for hours before entering the residence and finding him unresponsive. No shots were fired by officers, according to an email from Sgt. Maggie Cox.

On Tuesday, police said in an email officers entered the house after hearing shots.

The suspect was identified as Tyrell Gilder, 38, who was pronounced dead at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The situation started around 11:30 a.m. Monday when officers responded to a residence near 24th Street and Broadway Road after receiving a call about shots being fired.

The suspect allegedly fired a handgun at a friend’s tires and pointed the gun at the friend and then himself.

The friend told police he’d gone to help Gilder deal with a mental health crisis.

After the confrontation, Gilder went back inside.

Police set up containment and closed Jones Avenue between 24th and 25th streets while trying to make contact with Gilder during the barricade situation.
