Woman arrested in Mesa for allegedly leaving 2 children in hot car
PHOENIX — A woman was arrested in Mesa on Sunday after she allegedly left two small children in a car to buy baby food.
Jamie Cassel, 23, left the car running near Dobson Road and Main Street while she went into Safeway, according to court documents.
A witness found the children in the car and waited for a few minutes before calling police.
According to court documents, Cassel told police she was gone for seven minutes, and she tried to hurry in the store because she knew it was hot.
It was 110 degrees at the time of the arrest, according to the documents.
The witness told police the vehicle was unlocked, so she took out a crying infant and the other child.
She said although the car was running, it was not in good condition and there was no cool air reaching the backseat.
Cassel was arrested on one count of negligent child abuse and booked on additional felony warrants.
