PHOENIX — Some new digs are on the way for Harkins Theatres.

The Arizona-based movie theatre company announced its plans for a new $32 million headquarters and retail campus on Wednesday.

The three-acre development, located at the intersection of the Loop 101 and McDonald Drive in Scottsdale, will be split up between the headquarters and mixed-use space.

The new 65,000-square-foot headquarters is expected to triple the size of the company’s current headquarters, also located on McDonald Drive.

“Even though we have been entertaining Arizonans for over 85 years, we feel that we are just getting started in our plans to bring bigger and better movie-going and entertainment to the community.” Mike Bowers, president and CEO, said in a press release.

“Our new headquarters will provide our team with the space and resources they need to continue to innovate and deliver for our guests.”

The campus will include a modern design with natural light and a focus on indoor-outdoor space.

“It’s hard to imagine that our headquarters used to fit inside my garage,” Dan Harkins, owner and executive chairman, said in the release. “Thanks to our loyal movie-goers, we have been fortunate to have experienced great success and growth over the years.

“We are absolutely thrilled to announce our new campus and to continue to bring the ultimate movie-going experience to our community.”

Harkins Theatres was founded in 1933, and is the largest independently owned move exhibitor in the country. The company boasts 4,000 employees, with more than 3,000 in Arizona. The new location is expected to house around 260 employees, with room to grow.

Completion of the new headquarters is expected in the summer of 2020.
