PHOENIX – A wrong-way driver smashed into another car Sunday night on Interstate 17 outside of Phoenix, injuring both drivers, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email to KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday that Sharon Weaver, 70, of Phoenix, was taken into custody.

She was accused of driving northbound in southbound lanes near Sunset Point shortly before 9 p.m.

Witnesses called the agency to report a white Dodge pickup truck was going in the opposite direction near milepost 244. The truck hit a blue Toyota SUV head-on.

The man behind the wheel suffered minor injuries, as did Weaver, who was taken to a hospital.

DPS troopers used a drone to take aerial shots of the accident scene, the email said.
