PHOENIX – Monday is the registration deadline for Phoenix residents to be eligible to vote in next month’s special election, which includes a ballot measure on the future of light rail in the city.

Registration can be completed online or with forms available at most libraries and government facilities, including the city clerk’s office on the 15th floor of City Hall.

Voters who use forms must submit them to the city clerk’s office by the close of business Monday to participate in the Aug. 27 election on two measures.

Proposition 105 asks voters if the city should end all light rail construction, including the hotly contested South Central extension, and redirect funds to other infrastructure projects.

Proposition 106 concerns annual assessments of pension liabilities and proposes a cap on budget growth for certain programs if pensions aren’t adequately funded.

Earlier this week, the Arizona Supreme Court rejected an attempt to keep the light rail question off the ballot.

Voting centers will be open Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Aug. 27 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For those signed up for early voting, ballots will be mailed out starting next week. The city began sending out publicity pamphlets this week.
