Yuma Border Patrol capturing far fewer migrants than in weeks past

PHOENIX — ICE has released far fewer migrant families into Arizona in recent weeks.
The Yuma Sector Border Patrol said the immigration crisis is far from over, even though the sector’s apprehension numbers are falling.
“So we went from 400 to 450 per day, to anywhere from 100 to 200 per day,” Agent Jose Garibay told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “We’ve even had some days where we’ve had 26 apprehensions.”
Garibay credits Mexico, not the deadly desert heat, for stopping the flow of Central American migrants.
“If you look at just over 1.5 months ago, we were at over 1,600 people in custody,” he said.
Now, Yuma Border Patrol is holding 300 people, even with its new temporary shelter designed to house 500 people.
ICE released 500 families into Arizona in the last three weeks, which is four times less than previous three-week periods.
