PHOENIX — AT&T opened a new 97,000-square-foot call center in Mesa on Thursday.

The building is an extension of the company’s corporate center near University Drive and Alma School Road.

The center is expected to handle 1.4 million calls each year and employ 500 people.

“We’re proud that AT&T continues to grow and invest in Mesa,” Mayor John Giles said in a press release.

“This new facility is a great endorsement of Mesa’s thriving economy and business-friendly environment.”

Giles announced plans for the facility in his State of the City speech in February.

Building features include Arizona-themed interior design, an auditorium, a fitness center and a recreational space.

AT&T currently has more than 1,700 employees in the state.

“The investment AT&T has made in this location proves that Mesa is a destination for companies to put down roots and grow their business,” City Councilman Francisco Heredia said in the release.

“This center is bringing a significant amount of jobs to the city and District 3, which is a big win for our community.”
