Phoenix debuts ‘giving meters,’ public art benefiting the homeless

PHOENIX — There’s a new way to give to the homeless in Phoenix, and it’s through art pieces called “giving meters.”

The city believes the meters will be a sustainable way to provide long-term solutions to homelessness.

The giving meters are hand-painted parking meters that will accept donations by coin or credit card benefiting outreach program PHX C.A.R.E.S.

“People can donate to provide services to end homelessness,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego told KTAR News 92.3 FM after the Tuesday unveiling.

“Right now, people are concerned with what’s the best way to give. Sometimes if you’re giving to a panhandler that might prolong that person from seeking services.”

The meters will serve as public art that encourages giving in Phoenix as the homeless population continues to grow.

The meters were painted by four local artists with vibrant designs.

“The giving meters will be easy to find with their bright colors throughout the downtown area,” Gallego added.

“There will be three installed on city streets and one will rove around the area ensuring more people learn about the new way to give.”

Phoenix City Councilwoman Debra Stark of District 3 was the champion for this new concept.
