PHOENIX – Arizona environmental regulators have issued an ozone pollution advisory for Thursday in the Phoenix area.

It was the third such health watch in just over a week.

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality officials put advisories in place when an area is expected to exceed the federal health standard for air quality.

Ozone pollution advisories also were issued Monday and July 10.

The regulatory agency recommended that people with respiratory problems limit their outdoor activities on advisory days.

Air pollution has its worst impact on children and older adults.

Exposure to ozone can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or aggravate bronchitis or other lung disease in those with respiratory problems, such as asthma and bronchitis.

Symptoms may include itchy eyes, nose, and throat, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain.

Generally, the highest levels of ozone are found in the afternoon.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
