PHOENIX — The 2020 U.S. Senate race in Arizona is shaping up to be the most expensive in the nation.

According to Federal Election Commission data compiled by Axios, Arizona’s two likely opponents took the top two spots for second quarter fundraising.

Democratic former astronaut Mark Kelly led the list, bringing in $4.2 million, while Republican Sen. Martha McSally reeled in $3.4 million.

The next-highest fundraiser was Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who raised $3.1 million.

The state with the second-most money raised for a Senate race was South Carolina, where Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham and Democrat Jaime Harrison brought in a total of $4.6 million in quarter two.

The top fundraiser for the U.S. House in Arizona was Democrat Dr. Hiral Tipirneni, who brought in $440,000.

The Democrat is challenging Republican Rep. David Schweikert, who raised $237,000, in District 6.

Republican President Donald Trump led the way for presidential candidates with $26.5 million in the second quarter, followed by Democrat Sen. Bernie Sanders with $25.7 million.

Behind Sanders were Democrats Mayor Pete Buttigieg ($24.9 million), former Vice President Joe Biden ($22 million) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren ($19.2 million).
