PHOENIX — The Gordon Biersch brewery on Mill Avenue and Fifth Street in Tempe has closed after nearly 20 years.

The second-story pub served a wide range of beers and upscale bar food, including Kobe-style beer burgers, ahi tuna and shrimp and lobster tacos.

The brewery also closed a location in Scottsdale in April, while locations in Glendale and Gilbert remain open.

A spokesman told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday that the July 7 closure was “purely a business decision.”

“We appreciate our raving fans of the brand and we certainly enjoyed operating the restaurants in Arizona,” he said.

The Tempe location opened in 1998 and is currently on top of a Starbucks and Spinelli’s Pizzeria.

The chain’s first location opened a decade earlier in Palo Alto, California. Gordon Biersch now operates more than 30 spots, including four in Taiwan.
