Autistic child transported to hospital after being left on bus in Goodyear

PHOENIX — A non-verbal 16-year-old child with autism was transported to a hospital on Tuesday afternoon after being left on a bus for three hours outside a day care in Goodyear, authorities said.
The child was taken to the hospital for heat-related issues after being found by staff and the child’s mother at around noon outside Precious Home Services, a day care for children with disabilities.
Goodyear police said the child was picked up by bus earlier in the day, and that the driver did not follow exit procedures by checking every row for passengers after reaching the day care.
“Instead of checking to make sure everyone got off the bus, there was one child left behind,” Lisa Berry, a Goodyear Police spokeswoman, told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
The child is expected to recover, according to Goodyear police.
The temperature on Tuesday in Goodyear at noon was 97 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
