PHOENIX — Heavy traffic on Interstate 17 southbound is causing delays for travelers returning to Phoenix after the holiday weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Traffic on Sunday is slow starting at Camp Verde near milepost 288, Arcosanti near milepost 264 and Black Canyon City near milepost 245.
Motorists planning to take I-17 southbound should plan for additional travel time.
AAA said a record 940,000 Arizonans were expected to hit the road or skies for a trip of more than 50 miles between Wednesday and Sunday, a 4% increase from last year’s all-time high of 903,000.
The high projection for Arizona mirrors national expectations, with AAA expecting a record of nearly 49 million U.S. travelers during the holiday.
