PHOENIX — After weeks of battling the Woodbury Fire in the Superstition Mountains, firefighters are giving control back over to the Tonto National Forest team.

As the blaze grew to become Arizona’s fifth-largest fire, Type 3 and Type 1 national teams took over control from the state, according to a press release.

The fire still stood around 120,000 acres and was 86% contained as of Thursday morning.

At its peak, more than 900 personnel were on scene to help fight the fire. On Thursday that number dropped to just over 230.

Some closures remain in place due to the fire, including State Route 88 from Tortilla Flat to State Highway 188 at Theodore Roosevelt Dam.

Apache Lake and its campgrounds will remain closed until SR 88 is reopened. The Tonto National Monument also remains closed.

The fire has been projected to be fully contained July 15.

The human-caused fire started June 8, about 5 miles northwest of Superior.
