PHOENIX – It will be a few weeks before electricity is permanently restored to a downtown Phoenix banking plaza, but temporary generators will bridge the gap in the meantime, a utility spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Two generators were to be installed at the Wells Fargo Plaza, Suzanne Trevino with Arizona Public Service told KTAR News 92.3 FM, and they were expected to be up and running by the evening.
As of 7 a.m. Friday, the building was operating on two generators as permanent repairs are needed, according to an APS statement.
The skyscraper at First Avenue and Washington Street is the last of those without power after a fatal underground explosion Sunday. APS electrician Rick Castillo, who was performing maintenance in an electrical vault, was killed.
Another worker was injured, suffering burns to his face and hands, but was recovering.
Calvin Goode Municipal Building, the Maricopa County Administration Building and the Phoenix Convention Center South Building went back online late Tuesday.
The bank building will take several more weeks for a lasting solution.
“(It’s) a more complicated restoration,” Trevino said. “We want to get everyone back to power just as quickly and safely.”
Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade said the blast in the vault happened around 10:35 p.m. Sunday. Flames were rushing out of the manhole when firefighters arrived.
