Crews place final bridge girder for new South Mountain Freeway

PHOENIX — The final bridge girder for Arizona’s largest freeway construction project in history has been placed.
Crews recently lowered the last girder at the interchange under construction at Desert Foothills Parkway in Ahwatukee, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
More than 1,000 girders on 40 bridges were placed over the past two years as part of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
The 22-mile freeway will provide a direct link between the East Valley and West Valley that bypasses downtown Phoenix.
RELATED STORIES
The freeway, which will connect with Interstate 10 at the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler and 59th Avenue in west Phoenix, is expected to open to traffic before the end of 2019.
Full completion of the freeway is expected in 2020.
