PHOENIX – One person was killed while another survived a car crash that ended up in a Phoenix canal late Thursday.
Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday that the driver, Kensley C. Dayzie, 26, whom they believed to be impaired, faced second-degree murder charges of Daria Quimayousie, 27.
A spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department said the car went into the water at 35th Avenue and Durango Street. First responders reached the accident site around 11:15 p.m. A police officer was already in the water helping the young man, whose injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Quimayousie was trapped in the submerged car, but the rescue team was unaware she was there because Dayzie had been uncooperative, police said.
It hadn’t been determined whether Quimayousie drowned or died from the impact of the crash.
Thompson said Dayzie had been speeding before reaching the canal bank. The car rolled, hit the water and landed upside down.
No other details were immediately available.
