PHOENIX – Firefighters successfully battled to keep a brush fire near Interstate 17 north of Phoenix under control Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The cause of the 25-acre fire near I-17 and Teresa Lane in New River was unknown, Capt. Rob McDade of the Phoenix Fire Department said in an email.

McDade said the fire was only 2 acres when crews first responded around 3:15 p.m.

He said the flames spread quickly and jumped over Circle Mountain Road.

Forward progress of the fire was stopped by around 5 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

The northbound I-17 frontage road between Anthem Way and New River Road was closed as a result of the fire, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

McDade said crews expected to remain on the scene for an extended time to ensure that all hot spots have been extinguished.

There were no reports of structure damage or injuries, he said.

Earlier Monday, Scottsdale and Phoenix crews contained a 15-acre brush fire that threatened around 15 homes in north Scottsdale near Dynamite Road between Hayden and Scottsdale roads.
