See fluffy flamingo chicks go for daily walks at Phoenix Zoo

PHOENIX – They aren’t pink, but they sure are cute.
Eleven flamingo chicks broke out of their eggs at the Phoenix Zoo last month, and you can watch them go for daily strolls as part of their exercise regimen.
They hatched between May 16 and May 23 after the eggs arrived from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park as part of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan program.
Flamingos grow quickly, the Phoenix Zoo said in a press release, and need regular exercise to stay healthy and strong.
The excursions, led by zoo staff, are tentatively scheduled for 8:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. every day on the Children’s Zoo Trail, except when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
The zoo said it will post schedule changes to its Twitter account.

The walks will continue until the chicks, which are fluffy and gray, are big enough to join the zoo’s current flock of flamingos, probably in August.
The hand-reared birds also will participate in educational experiences as part of the zoo’s ambassador program.
Fun fact: Adult flamingos are pink because of pigments that occur naturally in their diet.
The zoo’s summer hours of 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. are in effect until Aug. 31.
