PHOENIX – A man captured on surveillance footage brutally abusing a small kitten in a Mesa parking lot was arrested this week, authorities said.

Nicholas Calfy, 23, was charged with animal cruelty and drug possession after his arrest Monday, the Mesa Police Department said in a blog post Wednesday.

Employees called police after finding the kitten, which appeared to have head trauma and tremors, in a car wash parking lot on Country Club Drive near U.S. 60.

Surveillance footage showed a man taking off his shirt and chasing the approximately 6-week-old kitten, the post said.

He covered the kitten with his shirt and kicked it multiple times. He then smoked a cigarette while staring at the injured animal.

Officers were able to determine the man in the video was Calfy and locate him.

The suspect admitted being the person in the video but said he didn’t remember the kitten, according to the post.

He was in possession of methamphetamine when he was arrested.
