PHOENIX — Two police officers were wounded in a private DPS training area at the Ben Avery shooting range.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the two officers wounded were struck with shrapnel from a firearm malfunction at the shooting facility.

Phoenix Fire Department, Daisy Mountain Fire Department and the Phoenix Police Department were all dispatched to the location near the intersection of Interstate 17 and Carefree Highway.

“Obviously a call like that comes in the alarm room, we put a helicopter on standby and we were sending all available units in that area,” Phoenix Fire captain Rob McDade said.

The injuries were found to be non-life threatening. One officer was struck in the chest area.

Both were taken to the hopital for further evaluation.

The identity of the victims was not immediately made available.
