Steel recycling plant in Mesa opens 63,000-square-foot addition

PHOENIX — A steel company, Commercial Metals Company, opened its doors last week to a new 63,000-square-foot addition to its facility in Mesa near the corner of Pecos and Mountain roads.
The addition allows the company to produce spooled steel rebar from mostly recycled scrap metal.
CMC Steel Arizona markets itself as an environmentally responsible micro mill that has been open since 2009.
“CMC is pleased to introduce this new product to the market, creating additional high quality jobs in the community as well as creating numerous efficiencies for our customers,” Barbara Smith, company chairman, president and CEO, said in a release.

Originally expected to handle a workforce of 200 employees, the company has expanded to 260 employees on site with another 20 who work for vendors through the facility.
The company began producing spooled rebar at its facility in Durant, Okla. last year. The Mesa site is the only other location with the same production capabilities.
Mesa was the first location in the country to use the company’s Electric Arc Furnace, which uses continuous technology and adds to the company’s “green” label.
“CMC commitment to innovation and new technology makes them a leader in the steel production, fabrication and recycling industry,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said in the release.
The Durant location has also adopted the EAF.
