Hospital grades decline in Arizona as state rankings improve

PHOENIX — The percentage of highly-graded hospitals in Arizona went down from the fall of 2018, but Arizona’s rank nationally improved in a new study.
Arizona leaped from No. 37 to No. 34 in the latest state rankings by HospitalSafetyGrade.com.
According to the study, 20% of Arizona’s hospitals received an A grade from the rankings website.
The percentage was a decline from the rankings released in the fall of 2018 that gave 21.74% of Arizona’s hospitals an A grade.
The latest rankings for the spring of 2019 had Arizona tied with New Mexico at No. 34 with both states coming in at 20%.
Arizona passed Alaska, Wyoming, Minnesota and Indiana in the rankings while Maryland improved from 20% to 25% and was the only state to pass Arizona.
Oregon was the top ranked state in the nation at 58.06%. Virginia and Maine rounded out the top three and were the only states to have more than 50% of hospitals receive A’s.
Four states – Wyoming, Alaska, Delaware, North Dakota and Washington, D.C. – had 0% of hospitals receive an A grade.
