PHOENIX — An East Valley high school student was chosen as a winner of an art competition for her photograph “A New Life,” which will be put on display in the U.S. Capitol for a year.
Yennifer Macias’ photo was selected among 42 submissions to the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for Rep. Greg Stanton’s district.
Not all of winners from other districts have been announced.
“Millions of tourists from around the world come to visit the U.S. Capitol every year, and I’m proud that they will see Yennifer’s photograph as a representation of our district,” Stanton said in a release.
The photo features a young girl holding on to the side of a train with a cloudy horizon in the background.
“When you look at Yennifer’s photograph, it’s clear she not only has a great eye, but also something to say,” said Stanton.
Macias snapped the photo near the corner of Mesa Drive and Southern Avenue with the intent to feature the struggle of immigrants trying to come to the United States.
She will be honored by Stanton and other members of Congress in Washington, D.C. at a reception on Capitol Hill.
