PHOENIX — Two Arizona eateries were named to a food and drink website’s list of the nation’s best Mexican restaurants earlier this month.
Thrillist added Barrio Café in Phoenix to the list, praising it for its James Beard Award nominations and graffiti murals.
The website called out the cochinita pibil and the chiles en nogada as the must-eats on the menu.
Barrio Café’s main restaurant is located near Thomas Road and 16th Street, but there’s also a site near Grand Avenue and Roosevelt Street and one at the Phoenix airport.
The other Arizona restaurant on the list is further south: El Charro Café in Tucson.
Thrillist said the same family has run the restaurant since 1922 and claims to have invented the chimichanga.
“While said fried burritos pack enough flavor that it’s wholly believable this could be the OG, the realest house specialty is the carne seca, which is dried daily before being shredded, grilled up with some peppers, tomatoes and onions,” Thrillist said in its post.
The website also recommended leaving room for the restaurant’s fried ice cream to top off the meal.
El Charro has four locations in southern Arizona: downtown Tucson, Oro Valley, Ventana and the Tucson airport.
