PHOENIX — Residents in one East Valley city will likely run into a myriad of traffic problems at a major intersection over the next few months.
Chandler will restrict traffic in and around the intersection of Arizona Avenue and Chicago Street downtown for work related to a development opening later this year, the city said in a press release.
Starting Monday, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction on sections of Arizona Avenue. The project is expected to take nearly three months to complete.
The first phase of construction will take place on the west side of Arizona Avenue.
During this time, one lane of traffic in each direction between Frye Road and Boston Street will be shifted to the east side of Arizona Avenue.
Access to West Chicago Street from Arizona Avenue will be blocked.
The second phase, on the east side of Arizona Avenue, will move one lane of traffic in each direction between Frye Road and Boston Street to the west side of Arizona Avenue.
East Chicago Street in front of Chandler City Hall will be closed to all traffic between Arizona Avenue and Washington Street.
The project will involve the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection.
The new traffic signal is one of the improvements ahead of the completion and opening of a mixed-use development.
The mixed-use development, called New Square Development, is expected to open across from Chandler City Hall before the end of the year.
It will house retail, office and restaurant space and a Hilton Garden Inn. Crews have already started construction on a new parking garage west of the development.
