PHOENIX — Two grocery stores in the East Valley that are owned by the same parent company are expected to close their doors for good later this month.
A Safeway near University Drive and Lindsay Road in Mesa and an Albertsons near Rural and Guadalupe roads are scheduled to close in mid-May.
“The decision was difficult and involved a lengthy evaluation,” Albertsons Companies spokeswoman Nancy Keane said in an email to KTAR News 92.3 FM.
“Ultimately these closures will strengthen operational efficiencies in the local market.”
A specific closing date was not given.
The employees at the locations will be offered transfers, Keane said.
Keane did not say how many employees would be affected or how many would be able to transfer.
Here are the addresses of the locations that are set to close:
• Safeway: 2740 E. University Dr., Mesa
• Albertsons: 750 E. Guadalupe Rd., Tempe
