PHOENIX — The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office released a new report Monday showing there are about 3.77 million active voters in Arizona.

The report, which reflects registration totals through April 1, found that there are 509,000 inactive voters in the state.

A voter’s status as active or inactive is not related to how many times he or she votes. Rather, a voter is considered inactive if there are questions about the accuracy of the registration information.

The report showed that active voters have decreased from 3.78 million in January, but Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said that dip is due to normal fluctuations.

“This is really attributable to regular movement of folks. Either people pass away, (or) they move out of the state,” she told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

Hobbs said the decrease is also due to “routine maintenance that we’re constantly engaged in to ensure that our records are accurate and that we’re maintaining the integrity of our elections.”

The report showed that about 1.29 million voters are registered as Republicans, 1.15 million as Democrats, 31,600 as Libertarians and 6,500 as members of the Green Party.

About 1.24 million voters fall into the “other” category, which includes Independents and those not registered with a party.

“Independent or unaffiliated voters continue to be the second-highest group of registered voters, and I think that … we’ve been seeing that trend for quite a long time,” Hobbs said.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Martha Maurer contributed to this report.
