PHOENIX — A Tempe high school student will soon get to see her artwork displayed on Valley Metro transportation systems for the next year.
CeLyn Evens, a student at Marcos de Niza High School, won this year’s contest to design a transit wrap, Valley Metro announced in a Thursday press release.
Evens’ artwork, called “A New Journey Everyday,” will be featured on a bus and a light rail train for one year.
“I really thought about the bus driving around and the people who were going to see it. I wanted to create something simple, but appealing and bright,” Evens said in a statement.
“I also wanted to show diversity since this bus will be going everywhere.”
She is the second Marcos de Niza student to win the contest in the last three years.
Evens’ piece was chosen from more than 100 entries submitted by high school students across the Valley.
Maggie Schira, a Marcos de Niza senior, was selected second place and Peoria High School senior Lyndzi Ramos placed third.
Ramos also won last year’s contest, with her design “Ride and Shine.”
Tempe Councilmember Joel Navarro, who also graduated from Marcos de Niza, said in a statement the passion from students like Evens makes him proud to be part of the community.
