PHOENIX – The Tempe City Council moved one step closer to filling its vacancy, choosing longtime resident Arlene Chin as the finalist on Thursday.

The council will vote on the appointment at next week’s regular meeting.

The swearing-in was scheduled to follow.

Chin was one of three to reach the second round of cuts. Don Cassero and Shereen Lener were also finalists.

Nearly 50 applied for the opening created when Kolby Granville was removed in April after allegations of sexual assault and giving alcohol to minors.

Granville had sat on the council since 2012.

Chin grew up in Tempe and works as an administrator for the nonprofit ASU Foundation.

“My Council colleagues and I feel such gratitude for the residents who stepped up and said they wanted to be considered to help lead our city,” Mayor Mark Mitchell said in a prepared statement of the 49 who put in their names for consideration.

“We had very strong applicants and our three finalists are all stellar examples of what it means to be involved residents.”

The term will end July 2020.

We want to hear from you.
