PHOENIX — Arizona agencies are preparing to combat DUIs this Cinco de Mayo weekend by doubling down on enforcement and offering ride-share discounts.

“Do it safely, get a designated driver, call Uber, call Lyft, call somebody, but don’t get behind the wheel because you want to look good,” Alberto Gutier, director of the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday.

Gutier said more than 80 agencies will be increasing police presence and looking for people who are impaired.

He said those who drive under the influence can face citations, thousands of dollars in fines, jail time, vehicle impoundment and job loss.

For those who plan to use a ride-share service to get around on the holiday, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is partnering with Banner Health and Lyft to offer discounted rides.

Through Sunday, first-time riders can get $5 off four Lyft rides using the code “CINCOPHX” and current users can enter the code “CINCOPHX19” to receive 20% off two rides.

“This campaign reminds people to plan ahead and eliminates one more excuse someone might have for not choosing a sober driver to get them home,” Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said in a press release.

“We want our community to choose a way home that doesn’t pose a risk to themselves or others.”

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Griselda Zetino contributed to this report.
