PHOENIX — A national coworking office space company will find a home in a mixed-use development in downtown Phoenix, the fourth Valley location to open this year.

WeWork announced Wednesday that it would open at the Block 23 development, which is expected to open in the fall at First and Washington streets.

The two-floor location will accommodate a community of approximately 1,600 members.

It will be the company’s fourth — and largest — metro Phoenix location. It has already announced plans to open two other offices in Phoenix and one in Tempe, which will open as early as this summer.

“We see a lot of growth opportunity and potential for WeWork in Phoenix and it will continue to be a focus of ours as a new market,” WeWork Community Director Jonathan Chasse said in a statement.

“We are expanding in Downtown Phoenix because it is a vibrant district for business and entertainment, and a magnet for creative industries.”

The downtown Phoenix location will have features such as an open floor plan, floor-to-ceiling glass and steel framing, a communal working space and futuristic neon design elements.

“With CityScape and Block 23, we set out to create spaces that are great places to live, work and play,” Mike Ebert, managing partner at RED Development, which is spearheading Block 23, said in a statement.

“WeWork joining Block 23 reaffirms that there has never been a better time to be in downtown Phoenix than the present.”

Block 23 has been a long time in the making. Phoenix City Council members voted in 2016 to develop a Fry’s grocery store in the complex.

It will also be home to a 230,000 square-foot office building, restaurants and retail shops, about 330 apartments and parking.

Mexican restaurant Blanco Tacos & Tequila announced in January that it would open in Block 23, the first restaurant tenant to do so.

Global firm Ernst & Young will also be among the complex’s tenants.

The company — the building’s first office tenant — signed a 20,000 square-foot office lease in December.

Construction on the complex is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
