PHOENIX — An infant girl has died after drowning in a toilet at a Phoenix home Wednesday, officials said.

The Phoenix Fire Department said the 11-month-old girl died after being transported in extremely critical condition to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

The home was near 24th Street and Indian School Road.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade told KTAR News 92.3 FM that a 16-year-old girl was watching the girl and another sibling, 3, while their parents were at work when the drowning occurred.

McDade said it’s important to remember that infants who cannot walk are still in danger of drowning because they can pull themselves into buckets or toilets and not have the strength to get out.

“It’s a very high stressful incident, for not only the rescuers, but now you can imagine this family trying to put back together how this happened,” he said.

“The best thing I can say is just watch your children at all times.”

Editor’s note: Police initially reported that the infant was 8 months old. That has since been updated.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Taylor Kinnerup contributed to this report.
