PHOENIX — Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport recorded its busiest month ever in March with nearly 4.5 million travelers passing through its gates.
“March is traditionally a very busy month for us here at Sky Harbor with spring training, spring break,” airport spokeswoman Heather Lissner told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.
“Many events around the Valley bring visitors in, and people travel out for spring break as well.”
About 120,000 passengers travel through the airport each day on average, but in March the daily average was 146,000.
The airport has had a busy year overall so far — from January through March, traffic was up 3% compared to the same period last year.
Sky Harbor broke its yearly record in 2018 with nearly 45 million passengers traveling through the airport, up from its previous record of about 44 million in 2015.
Lissner said the airport is improving its facilities to accommodate its growing number of passengers, including an extension of the Sky Train to the rental car center and an additional eight-gate concourse in Terminal 4, both expected to open in 2022.
Sky Harbor has been working on renovating Terminal 3 since 2015, with the first phase completed in 2016 and the second in January of this year.
The program’s final phase — a renovated north concourse featuring new local restaurants and increased access to power outlets, among other amenities — is expected to open in 2020.
