Drivers are encouraged to use local routes, including McDowell Road, as a detour.
Also, 59th Avenue will be closed between McDowell Road and Roosevelt Street near I-10 from 5 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday for structure painting at the interchange.
Use 51st Avenue as an alternate route.
The South Mountain Freeway will be a 22-mile link between the East Valley and West Valley and provide a much-needed alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix.
It is expected to be complete in 2020.
There will also be several closures in Tempe this weekend for Pat’s Run, starting Friday at 4 p.m.
