PHOENIX — A 69-year-old Valley woman fell to her death at the Grand Canyon on Tuesday.

According to officials, park rangers responded to a call around 1:05 p.m. of a person in need of help west of Pipe Creek Vista.

Before she could be rescued, the woman fell.

With the assistance of a park helicopter and a technical rescue team, the woman’s body was located about 200 feet below the rim.

The helicopter and rescue team, comprised of about 15 people, recovered the body later in the afternoon.

Authorities identified the woman Wednesday as 69-year-old Cynthia Ackley of Peoria.

No other information was immediately available.

The death is the fourth recent fatality at the Grand Canyon.

Earlier this month, a 67-year-old man fell 400 feet to his death.

In late March, two visitors were also found dead in separate incidents.

The body of a Hong Kong man was found 1,000 feet below the rim at Grand Canyon West on March 28, while a Japanese tourist was found dead March 26 in a wooded area south of Grand Canyon Village, away from the rim.

Editor’s note: An earlier versions of this story used information provided by authorities who said the woman was 70 years old.
