Arizona State University to host all-women football clinic this week

Apr 23, 2019, 5:00 AM

PHOENIX — Women who are football fans will have the opportunity to participate in a unique experience hosted by Arizona State University on Thursday.

Sun Devil Football head coach Herm Edwards, his wife Lia, and university athletic director Ray Anderson’s wife Buffie will host the 2019 Sun Devil Football Women’s Clinic.

The event will aim to educate and empower young women on the male-dominant sport.

“The focus is going to be educating women about football, simple things that happen on the field that they question,” Buffie Anderson said.

“It’s just broadening the experience and filing our seats with knowledgeable fans.”

Nearly 53 percent of university alumni who attend Sun Devil football games identify as women, according to Lia Edwards.

But the group hopes to get more women involved, beyond just attending the games. They hope to see more women involved in coaching, officiating and broadcasting the sport.

“It’s something they’ve done in the past but we are bringing it back under our leadership and our husbands’ leadership,” Lia Edwards said.

“Knowledge is power and I think when you come to a football game you don’t want to rely on anybody but yourself to interpret what you see on the football field.”

The event will include a tour of the stadium, a behind the scenes look at the training room, a meet-and-greet with coaches and taking the field to learn different plays and routes.

Tickets to the event, which will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the Sun Devil Student-Athletic Facility on the north side of Sun Devil Stadium, can be found on ASU’s website.

We want to hear from you.
