PHOENIX – A longtime Peoria city councilman resigned from office Tuesday because of ongoing health issues.

Carlo Leone was first elected to represent the West Valley suburb’s Pine District in May 1999.

“This job is too important to give anything less than 100%, and unfortunately I am no longer able to give that at this time,” Leone said in a press release, which didn’t provide specifics about his health issues.

Leone, who turned 84 the day he stepped down, was elected to his sixth term in 2018.

“On behalf of the Peoria City Council, we thank him for his years of service,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said in the release.

“His retirement is well-deserved, and we wish him health and happiness.”

According to his profile on the city’s website, Leone, a retired union manager, has lived in Peoria since 1988.

“Carlo has always represented the city with pride and enthusiasm,” City Manager Jeff Tyne said in the release.

“It has been a privilege to serve under his leadership.”

The City Council will appoint an interim council member to fill Leone’s seat until an Aug. 27 special election.

Anybody wanting to apply for the interim position must have lived in the Pine District for at least one year.

Candidates, who also have to be at least 21 years old and registered Arizona voters, need to file their intent by April 26.

The Council will conduct interviews at an April 29 special meeting.

For more information, call the city clerk at 623-773-7340.

We want to hear from you.
