Arizona can stake claim to two of the top American finishers on the men’s and women’s side of the 2019 Boston Marathon.

Defending women’s champion and former Arizona State runner Desiree Linden finished fifth overall Monday, and Flagstaff native Scott Fauble was the top American man, finishing seventh overall.

Linden finished in 2 hours, 27 minutes, nearly 13 minutes faster than when she battled through icy rain to win in 2018.

She was 2 minutes, 20 seconds behind fellow American Jordan Hasay who was the top American woman finishing in third place.

Woknesh Degefa ran alone for the last 20 miles winning the women’s race.

Last year’s second-place finisher, full-time nurse Sarah Sellers of Tucson, also improved her time from last year but finished 19th.

On the men’s side, Fauble completed the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 9 seconds.

It was the first time he finished a marathon in under 2 hours, 10 minutes. His previous personal-best was 2 hours, 12 minutes last November in the New York City Marathon.

Lawrence Cherono out-sprinted Lelisa Desisa in the last 100 meters to win the men’s race by just two seconds.

Cherono’s final time was 2 hours, 7 minutes, 57 seconds.
