PHOENIX – A child fell out of a moving minivan onto a freeway in a Phoenix suburb late Monday night and was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.
Capt. Tommy Taylor with Buckeye Fire Medical and Rescue said they treated an unresponsive 8-year-old girl on Interstate 10 near Miller Road shortly before midnight.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Raul Garcia said Tuesday that preliminary findings indicate the girl was moving around in the minivan when, “for an unknown reason,” the sliding passenger door opened and she fell out.
The girl was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Eastbound I-10 was closed for a short period while the medical helicopter picked up the girl.
No other details were immediately available.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating.
