PHOENIX — Three people were killed and three firefighters were injured after a collision Sunday morning involving a pickup truck and a Phoenix fire engine.

Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said a man died at the scene of the crash near 29th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

A woman and an infant child were taken to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

The victims were later identified as 20-year-old Kenneth Collins, 19-year-old Dariana Serrano and their 3-month-old son.

Three unidentified firefighters were taken to Banner University Medical Center. Lewis said they were in stable condition.

Lewis said in a Monday morning email that the victims were killed after their 1996 Ford Ranger turned left in front of the firetruck, which was driving in the opposite direction with its lights and siren on.

The force of the crash caused “extensive damage” to the pickup truck and the fire engine rolled multiple times. The child was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade said Sunday evening that one firefighter was released from the hospital while the other two remained overnight for observation.

“As you can imagine, when we have civilians to treat in this manner and injuries are this severe, it will hit our first responders,” Lewis said at a press conference.

“Help is being reached out to our employees … and we understand that this type of situation is not only hard when you’re dealing with civilians, especially children, but when you as an emergency responder roll on a scene where your very own are part of the victims.”

Lewis said Bethany Home Road will remain closed from 27th to 31st avenues until the investigation is complete.
