10-year-old killed, father injured in Phoenix road rage shooting

PHOENIX — A 10-year-old girl died early Thursday after she and her father were shot while driving home in Phoenix the night before.

Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said the suspect in the shooting near 39th Avenue and Roosevelt Street is still outstanding in what he was calling a homicide.

The girl was later identified as Summerbell Brown.

The unidentified man is recovering from his injuries. His condition was not immediately known, but Lewis told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News that he is expected to survive.

Lewis told KTAR News the man was driving home around 6 p.m. with his wife in the passenger’s seat and two daughters in the backseat when the shooting occurred. The woman and the other girl were not injured.

“After talking with witnesses and viewing surveillance footage from the area, investigators saw that they were closely followed by a white four-door pickup,” Lewis said.

“When the victim family arrived at home, they pulled into the driveway. Then shots were fired from that pickup, striking the victim’s car.”

Lewis said that road rage may have led to the shooting.

“It’s possible that this was a road rage that started earlier in the area prior to the victim’s family arriving at home,” he said.

“Driving is a stressful situation that requires all of your attention, so if you do encounter an aggressive driver, we’re asking that you call Phoenix Police.”

The suspect is described as a male 30 to 40 years old wearing a yellow shirt.

He was driving a white Ford F-150, 4-door pickup with dark-colored trim on the bottom. The car also had damage along the left rear.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Phoenix Police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
