PHOENIX – An East Valley road was closed for hazardous material cleanup after a traffic accident Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Arizona Avenue was closed from Queen Creek to Germann roads in Chandler during the cleanup, Officer Kevin Quinn of the Chandler Police Department said in an email.

It wasn’t known how long the complicated cleanup process would take.

According to ABC15, several homes in the area were evacuated after the accident, which occurred around 12:30 p.m.

Quinn said a box truck traveling north on Arizona Avenue ran a red light at Queen Creek Road and hit a vehicle heading westbound.

The driver of the truck fled on foot, but responding officers located him and took him in into custody.

Officers noticed the cargo area of the truck was smoking and leaking an unknown substance. ABC15 reported that the spill was from barrels of phosphorus.

The Chandler Fire Department was called into handle the cleanup.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on two unrelated warrants and will be charged with hit and run, driving with a revoked license and running a red light, Quinn said.
