PHOENIX — A suspect was shot and injured by a Peoria police sergeant late Wednesday after allegedly reaching for a gun during a traffic stop.
The Peoria Police Department said in a Thursday statement that the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Samuel Denk, reached for the handgun when the unidentified sergeant fired at least one round, striking him in the face.
Denk was taken to a hospital with serious injuries where he was being treated. He was released on April 2. No officers or other people were injured.
He was booked into Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix on aggravated assault charges.
The traffic stop occurred around 11 p.m. in the area of 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street.
The sergeant was wearing an activated body-worn camera during the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
It was the second Peoria officer-involved shooting and 14th in the metro Phoenix area so far in 2019.
