Online permit testing program saves time for all at Arizona MVD offices

PHOENIX – Fledgling Arizona drivers aren’t the only ones benefiting from the state’s online learner’s permit test program.

Since Permit Test @ Home debuted one year ago, 83,000 permit tests were taken online, the Arizona Department of Transportation said this week.

New teen drivers still have to go to a Motor Vehicle Division office to pick up their permits, but the transaction is much faster, freeing up office space and time for other customers, the agency said.

ADOT said time-saving policies such as Permit Test @ Home have helped the MVD knock about half an hour off the average office visit since 2015, from 52 minutes to 22 minutes.

Applicants must be at least 15½ years old, and once they obtain permits they can only get behind the wheel with a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat.

New drivers under 18 must accumulate 30 road hours under permit restrictions for six months and then pass a road test to earn a license.
