PHOENIX — A Glendale nurse wanted to do something unique for her 73rd birthday.
But for her, “unique” meant more than just trying a new restaurant — it meant climbing the tallest mountain in Africa.
Betty Schley, a pediatric nurse at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, hiked the 68-mile trail at Mount Kilimanjaro all the way to Uhuru Peak, according to a press release.
In her lifetime she has visited all seven continents, gone scuba diving in the Red Sea and Thailand and gone ice diving in Canada.
“I tell everyone, you’re only as old as you think you are,” Schley said in the release.
“If you think you can’t do it, then you’ll never do it.”
Schley began her nursing career as a volunteer at just 13 years old.
She was recently a guest on the podcast “Bedtime Stories,” where she shared stories from her line of work.
